Heart Failure and Air Travel
Heart failure is a condition where the heart can't pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. This often leads to fluid buildup in the lungs and other parts of the body, causing symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling.
Impact of Cabin Pressure: Aircraft cabins are pressurized to simulate an altitude of 5,000 to 8,000 feet above sea level. This means the air has a lower partial pressure of oxygen compared to sea level. For healthy individuals, this slight decrease in oxygen is usually not a problem. However, for people with heart failure, whose hearts are already struggling to pump oxygen-rich blood efficiently, this reduction in available oxygen can exacerbate their symptoms.
Exacerbation of Symptoms: The lower oxygen levels can lead to:Increased shortness of breath (dyspnea).
Worsening fatigue.
Increased fluid buildup in the lungs (pulmonary edema), further compromising breathing.
