When traveling, especially to warm climates with opportunities for swimming, it's important to take precautions against otitis externa, commonly known as swimmer's ear. This infection of the outer ear canal is often caused by bacteria or fungi thriving in moist environments. To prevent it, thoroughly dry your ears after swimming or showering. You can use earplugs while swimming to minimize water entry and consider using over-the-counter ear drops containing alcohol or acetic acid after water exposure to help dry the ear canal and prevent infection. While acetic acid (vinegar) can be a helpful home remedy, it may not be sufficient for all cases of swimmer's ear. You may require prescription antibiotic ear drops, or even oral antibiotics, depending on the severity and cause of the infection.
