Middle Ear Infections and Air Travel:
Changes in cabin pressure during ascent and descent can significantly impact individuals with middle ear infections (otitis media). The middle ear is an air-filled space behind the eardrum, connected to the back of the nose and throat by the Eustachian tube. This tube's function is to equalize pressure between the middle ear and the outside environment. When this equalization is disrupted, as during rapid changes in altitude during flight, discomfort and pain can arise.
How Cabin Pressure Affects the Ears: During takeoff, as the plane ascends and cabin pressure decreases, the air pressure in the middle ear becomes relatively higher than the cabin pressure. This can cause the eardrum to bulge outwards. Conversely, during landing, as the plane descends and cabin pressure increases, the air pressure in the middle ear becomes relatively lower, causing the eardrum to retract inwards.
